Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) rolled out the red carpet for its upgraded entry into the passenger carrier segment with the global premiere of the 2019 Toyota Hiace at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in BGC, Taguig.
TMC has chosen the Philippines as a venue for the global debut of the new Hiace due to the large market sales of the well-known passenger vehicle (or UV Express vehicle), an iconic van that has provided mobility services not just to the public transport sector but also to various public and private sectors as well.
For the country’s first global debut of a car model, TMC and Toyota Motor Philippines officially introduced the three variants of the 2019 Hiace, namely the GL Grandia Tourer, the GL Grandia, and the Commuter Deluxe. All variants have longer and wider sizes to accommodate all the commuters’ transport needs.
Designed to increase productivity and provide a safer ride, the 2019 Toyota Hiace has a new semi-bonnet design, meaning the engine is no longer mounted atop the front wheel axle. This also provides better ergonomics and reduces the heat and vibration that both driver and passengers feel under their seats.
Outside, the 2019 Hiace is equipped with a new pair of headlights, front grille, and bumper. It also has redesigned side mirrors and new alloy wheels (for higher variants). At the back, the van has bigger taillights and a new tailgate.
One of the key changes in the new people carrier is its size. The GL Grandia and the Commuter Deluxe have dimensions of 5265 mm long, 1950 wide, and 1990 tall, while their wheelbase is at 3210 mm.
On the other hand, the new GL Grandia Tourer has dimensions of 5915 mm long, 1950 mm wide, and 2280 mm tall. It also has a larger wheelbase that measures 3860 mm.
Get inside the passengers’ seat and you’ll see the updated dashboard: the 4.2-inch information display, new gear shifter, air-conditioning vents, and instrument panel. The Commuter Deluxe is capable to carry up to 15 passengers, the GL Grandia can carry 12 passengers, while the GL Tourer can carry 14.
The 2019 Toyota Hiace bids goodbye to the former 3.0-liter 1KD-FTV series turbo-diesel as it is now replaced with a 2.8-liter 1GD-FTV four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine similar to the Innova, Fortuner and Hilux. The engine is mated to an automatic and manual gearbox with 6-speed models.
The Commuter Deluxe and GL Grandia can produce an output of 174 bhp at 3400 rpm and 332 lb-ft of torque at maximum rpm of 2400 for the Commuter, while there’s 310 lb-ft of torque at 2600 maximum rpm for the GL Grandia. For the Tourer variant, it has an output of 161 bhp and 310 lb-ft of torque.
In terms of safety, the 2019 Hiace is equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS), two front airbags for the GL Grandia and Tourer models, and an added central airbag for the Commuter Deluxe making it three. Both GL Grandia variants have stability control and hill start assist. The Tourer variant also has rear discs instead of drum brakes.
