Last year, when we tested the all-new Jeep Renegade, in its top-of-the-range at the time Trailhawk variant, we got divided opinions. This time around with the even higher Renegade Limited edition, there were enough redeeming equipment updates to finally give the new little Jeep a perfect score. I still wish it had better headlights though, like the HID projector units found in the Italian market Jeep Renegade, but I digress.
The Renegade Limited test unit we review here had the optional My Sky (a $1,470.00 cost) power retractable roof panels, which you can also completely remove in two full sections that transform into a baby pseudo-Wrangler. That is a neat trick, but what isn’t so neat is having to tuck it away in the trunk where the panels or the trunk itself can get scuffed while also reducing capacity in the process. Now, all this is moot if you plan ahead or use the system without removing the sections, just like any other sunroof/moonroof.
Where the Renegade Trailhawk was a rough and tough little go-getter with the additional protection to support genuine trailing, the Limited essentially has the same off-road capability but focuses on the urban jungle instead, even if it can still wade through 500 mm of water. The Limited has a very unique and very stylized interior, which contrasts the more reserved exterior compared to the Trailhawk. The Ski Grey premium leather contrasts very attractively against the bark brown leather, which is then stitched with generous amounts of tangerine colored thread and cloth. It looks even better in person, and the seats are very comfortable, but it also reinforces the redirection of the Limited toward staying on the road as well. These almost white seat surfaces are so vulnerable to staining that I would hate to get the crossover dirty, which is contrary to what a Jeep is all about to begin with!
Much like the Trailhawk, which has an abundant application of character and branding details all over the vehicle, the Limited takes that love-it or hate-it feature to almost ridiculous levels. It was one thing to see the cool map of the Moab off-road area embossed in the center console tray on the Trailhawk, but to see the Jeep grill in almost every nook and cranny, from the headlight bulb cover to the mirror housing, is taking brand reinforcement to an entirely psychedelic level. Our test unit also had the excellent optional Beats audio system ($695.00) that ties the festive ambiance and the airy personality of the Renegade deeper together.
The only other physical difference, besides the omission of all the weighty hooks and protection plating on the Trailhawk, is that the Limited comes with 18” x 7” alloys shod with road-biased 225/55R18 98V Goodyear Eagle Sport all-season tires, which definitely modifies the driving behavior. The Limited is no faster than before, but it does handle better, is more refined, and very entertaining. Its biggest limitation really is that it is best enjoyed as a 4-seater due to its unique yet compelling packaging.
