JAC Philippines recently launched its newest entry into the highly contested subcompact crossover segment, the all-new S4 model which is sold in four variants for our current domestic market. The white test unit you see here represents the middle “Intelligent” model range priced competitively at P998,000.00. The most basic entry-level model is named the Luxury variant mated with a manual transmission that retails for P878,000.00 with the next ring up selling for P928,000.00 with the same name and packaging but with the Continuously Variable Transmission.
The finest variant which we would recommend at P1,098,000.00 is aptly named the Ultimate which has more equipment than this test unit that includes essential additional front side-airbags and side curtain airbags to complement the more comprehensive safety suite (Lane Departure Warning, Blindspot Monitoring, Cross Traffic Alert, and Front Collision Warning), a powered tailgate, full-LED headlights and rear passenger ventilation among others.
Much like other competitors in this segment, the JAC S4’s suspension is fully independent up front with a rear torsion beam. The alloy wheels are well designed and are wrapped with quite compliant Giti GitiComfort F22 advantZtech 215/50R17 95V XL tires. The handling and ride comfort are better than the segment average but the CVT compromises dynamic power delivery. The all-disc brake system is also above average and supported with a myriad of driver control assists. The JAC S4 is certainly not a hot hatch but it also doesn’t pretend to be either. The modest CVT and engine have been deliberately tuned more for smoothness and efficient everyday drivability rather than cater to enthusiasts looking for spirited adventures.
I reckon that the stylish JAC S4 is currently the finest product in their whole family range with the very best fit and finish, design, and consumer packaging. The faux-leather seating is very comfortable but best for 4-adults. It has a good infotainment system with 6-speakers, smart key, 360-degree camera with front and rear sonar, cruise control, moonroof, and more. You definitely get a lot of kit for the money and it is one of the most spacious in the segment as well.
