2020 Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid

The Finest of the Breed

It may not be the quickest or fastest Toyota Corolla ever but the all-new Corolla Altis Hybrid is the very best overall variant ever produced. It is at its most refined, best looking, most generously equipped, most comfortable, quietest, best handling and most efficient model ever. Toyota Motor Philippines has done it, not only have they put together the best packaged Corolla Hybrid in the markets where it is offered abroad, they have also been able to make it as affordable as possible with almost insignificant compromises. This metallic red mica Altis Hybrid is P760,000.00 cheaper than the 4th-generation Prius and P390,000.00 less expensive compared to the severely outdated Prius C. As a bonus, especially in this color, you will appreciate the unique yet subtle design contrasts in both the front and rear light assemblies.

The Altis Hybrid uses the same excellent Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) chassis and ubiquitous drivetrain of the Prius hatchback featuring fully independent suspension but it gives up 405-liters of trunk space, the unique styling, doesn’t have the 10-speaker JBL audio, and uses a slightly less featured nickel-metal-hydride battery instead of lithium-ion. The real-world result of the battery change is about a 1.5% decrease in range but with no change in response. The dynamic good news though is the Altis Hybrid is roughly 220 pounds lighter than the Prius with the same powertrain so it drives with more spright and enthusiasm.

The Philippine-spec Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid also has the most comprehensive model standard active and passive safety equipment which includes adaptive cruise control, stability control, pre-collision, lane tracing and departure, sonar, automatic rain-sensing wipers, 7 SRS bags, full-LED exterior lighting, well-balanced 10.8-inch front vented disc and 10.2-inch solid disc brakes, and very tastefully designed machined two-tone multi-spoke 17-inch alloys wrapped with 225/45R17 91W Dunlop Sport Maxx 050 tires. The 7-inch infotainment system with rear camera performs reasonably well through 6-speakers but I wish it had a better system. The climate control works well and the rear seats do have strong rear vents. The interior design is spartan but it grows on you. The instrument panel could have been more attractive and display more data for sure. The additional little features are very welcome too, from the manual rear sunshade to the remote-control switchgear on the well-designed steering wheel. The seat designs are actually pretty good and complements the dashboard.

The Toyota Corolla Altis Hybrid is an excellent everyday sedan with minor shortcomings. It may not be the most dynamic hybrid in the market but it is an outstanding and practical environmentally-conscious generalist. You cannot buy a better Corolla in any market.
