2022 Ford Explorer Limited

The Stealthy Overachiever

With the quiet departure of Ford Philippines’ massive full-size Expedition SUV that has set the C! award-winning standard in its class almost every year since 2004, the all-new sixth generation Explorer is expected to carry its duties. Compared to the outgoing model, the all-new Ford Explorer is back to being primarily rear-wheel driven and gains significantly in every aspect except actual physical size.

The 2022 Ford Explorer uses the new CD6 platform shared with the brilliant new 2nd generation Lincoln Aviator instead of the old CD3 platform that was used with transverse engines and were mostly front-wheel driven. With the new more robust platform that accommodates a variety of electrification, the new Explorer has a longer wheelbase of 3025 mm compared to 2860 mm, but the body is not much longer at 5050 mm compared to 5006 mm with the same width of 2004 mm while the ceiling height is actually lower by 13 mm. The trunk capacity of the old model is actually 79 liters more than the new one too. What this all means though is that Ford focused on increasing passenger comfort with updated standard equipment while vastly improving the dynamic performance. So, even if the new Ford Explorer may not look much larger than the old model, it is a more superior overall product. Our market does not get the optional powertrains yet that include Hybrids and higher power, but that is alright as the lone Limited model is already very full-featured and is the most powerful in its class in our Philippine market.

Until Kia Philippines sells the Telluride and the new Hyundai Philippines group sells the Palisade with their V6 engines, the Ford Explorer will literally be untouchable in its class of upscale mid-size crossovers. The new Ford Explorer has more interior room, more power, and more standard features than even the previous best-in-class C! Award winner the Mazda CX-9 which is still more refined and more sedan-like in handling.

The Ford Explorer Limited is teaming with kit that includes a panoramic moonroof, 8 different exterior colors, 8-inch SYNC 3 infotainment system with 360-Degree Cameras, Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ Compatibility, a rocking 780-watt Bang & Olufsen 12-speaker audio (there is even an optional 14-speaker, 980-watt B&O system available in the US market), a very healthy and energetic 300 bhp 2.3-liter turbo engine that was applied with more potent tuning in the old Ford Focus RS and the Mustang, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charger, and so much more.

It does not have the capacity of the Ford Expedition or a Chevrolet Tahoe or a Nissan Patrol but the all-new Explorer is larger than anything else in its direct class and is astoundingly better than its predecessor in every possible way.
