It is hard to believe that over a dozen years have passed since we acquired our special edition bespoke C! Fastfleet Kia Sorento Deluxe. At that time our 2nd generation Sorento CRDi had AWD, a high-fidelity multi-speaker system, a panoramic roof, and so much more. So, I was hoping that the all-new 4th generation Kia Sorento, here tested in its current top-spec SX guise in Snow White Pearl for an extra P10,000.00 above the standard color of Silky Silver (funny that the only other alternative color is Aurora Black Pearl which costs the same additional premium whether you get the SX or entry level EX variant), would have all the updated equipment available from previous generations.
Kia Philippines certainly did the best they could to offer the outstanding all-new Kia Sorento midsize crossover with the most salient standard features packaged with the new Smartstream 2.2-liter turbodiesel and 8-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (the first application of Kia’s DCT in the Philippine market) while managing the retail price. Despite that effort though, there were sacrifices and the costs are still challenging. The good news though is that the Sorento SX is ultimately still very desirable and it is at its overall best in our market. Together with the all-new Kia Carnival, the Sorento also displays the new tasteful brand identity and loads of great standard equipment.
Compared to the previous generation, the all-new Sorento has grown significantly larger in every proportion combined with an aggressively designed body that mirrors the larger Telluride which we think is the absolute best in its segment in North America (it is not offered in our country principally because it uses a 291 bhp 3.8-liter V6 gasoline engine which would make it very too expensive). The Sorento uses an even longer wheelbase than before, by 35 mm (1.4 in), while the vehicle’s overall length is stretched by 10 mm (0.4 inches). At the moment for the Philippines, the Sorento is purely a front-wheel drive with no option for the Torque-vectoring All-Wheel Drive (AWD) w/ Center-Locking Differential system which would have also raised the ground clearance further by 1.3-inches. The new DCT may have some slight throttle lag from rest or when transitioning from reverse to drive, but the transmission otherwise performed smoothly.
As a luxurious 7-seater crossover however, with fully independent suspension that uses liberal amounts of aluminum, the Sorento is the third most dynamic, quickest and fastest vehicle in the Kia showrooms following the Stinger GT and the outgoing Forte GT sedans. It may not have the other optional powerplants and electrification found in other markets, nor the optional 12-speaker Bose® sound system, panoramic roof, and other kit. Though it does have a few surprises in the SX variant like the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that can superimpose images from the blind-spot monitors in the most effective way possible. The chiseled 2022 Kia Sorento is a compelling substitute for the Telluride in a package that has more interior room and adjustability than a Toyota Fortuner. The acceleration, fuel efficiency, ride, handling, and braking are superior to any midsize crossover and ladder-framed SUV in our market. The new interior design and abundant multiple rhombus-shaped cooling vents are the finest and most unique in its segment as well. The 8-inch central infotainment system may not be as large as the 10.3-inch systems in other markets but I prefer it as it is less distracting and retains almost all the functionality that includes the 360-degree camera. One of the most important details that both the all-new Carnival and Sorento have are third-row ISOFIX mounts which allows owner-driven vehicles to safely and properly position young children at the most rearward row in order to maximize space and comfort for adults in the second row.
