Peugeot is well known for their very unique designs and engineering. For their newly facelifted 2nd generation 3008 compact crossover, they have truly outdone themselves. Part of our comprehensive testing of the new Peugeot 3008, seen here in the very tasteful Amazonite Grey, included driving it to El Jardin de Zaida, a spectacular eleven-hectare resort, spa, and events location in Sitio Lagkit, Brgy. Abung San Juan, Batangas. A distinctly designed crossover requires a destination that represents parallel levels of desirability and tangible enjoyment. We explored the gorgeous property that features some of the most beautiful exquisitely landscaped indigenous flora and fauna that we have seen in a very long time. Even with just the front wheels being driven, we had no issues whatsoever soft-roading in routes usually traversed with a Polaris Multi-Terrain Vehicle thanks to the long-stroke suspension and generous ground clearance of the 3008 without even engaging the Grip Control that regulates power in four settings (Normal, Snow, Mud, and Sand) depending on the surface.
The new Philippine-spec Peugeot 3008 crossovers are extra desirable too because they use the 2.2-inch longer wheelbase EMP2 chassis that can only be availed from markets that source from either Malaysia or China. Our market sources from the Stellantis plant in Gurun, Kedah, Malaysia. It has a 2730 mm wheelbase, a length of 4510 mm, width at 1850 mm, and height at 1628 mm with a 7.8-inch ground clearance.
The new front frameless radiator grille looks brilliant, accentuated by the new signature DRL “fangs” lighting on the metallized fairing bumper and glossy black side scoops combined with the full-LED headlights and chrome-plated tips. The new rear lights also feature three dimensional claws with a transparent smoke window and sequential indicators. The stylish 18-inch “Los Angeles” alloys (ironic that Peugeot used the moniker despite not being officially sold in the North American market since 1992) are wrapped with excellent 225/55R18 98V Continental ContiCrossContact LX2 tires. The suspension (MacPherson struts up front and rear torsion beam) with these alloys totally managed the harsh highway concrete and provincial roads expertly. Peugeot calibrated the suspension very well for our Philippine driving surface and traffic conditions. We always felt very planted and nimble with strong compliance and without sloppiness.
The awesome fully-adjustable electric steering wheel is perfectly balanced and very precise. The small steering wheel size also makes viewing the cool digital iCockpit 12.3-inch customizable TFT instrument panel resemble a heads-up display. The dashboard design, soft materials, and even the hard plastics in the entire cabin are very upmarket. The leather seats with contrasting stitching look great and are both comfortable and properly supportive. The central 10-inch control touchscreen infotainment system with 6-speakers and Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™, has thoughtful shortcut toggle switches, and rear 180° reverse camera with front and rear parking sonar. The wireless phone charger is secure so your phone does not lose its charge position easily. The steering wheel paddleshifts work very well managing the excellent Aisin 6-speed automatic when you want extra entertainment from the overachieving award-winning 1.6-liter turbocharged engine that used to also be enjoyed in both MINI and BMW vehicles not too long ago.
The cabin is genuinely very spacious for a compact crossover especially for the rear passengers thanks to the longer wheelbase. The fabric dash and door panels are also a refreshing design touch. The trunk capacity is 591 liters with the second-row seats fixed, and 1,670 liters with the second row folded with a powered smart trunk. The panoramic moonroof and ambient lighting also contribute greatly to the overall sense of passenger comfort and enjoyment. The rear climate vents also have an extra USB port to charge a device. If you need even more capacity and additional passenger seating, the larger 5008 fulfills those requirements. It has additional standard driver aids as well; the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite has Active Blind Spot Detection, Active Lane Keep Assistance, Advanced Driver Attention Warning, the Advanced Grip Control, Hill Start Assist, and Hill Assist Descent Control (HADC).
The Peugeot 3008 is arguably the most stylish, most loaded, and most affordable European crossover offered in our market that is also a very good dynamic performer. It is a practical, elegant, and versatile five-seater with remarkable build quality and fit/finish.
