2022 Peugeot 5008 SUV

The Extended Tapestry of Functional Form

Much like its smaller 5-seater brother the 3008, the 2nd generation 7-seater 2022 Peugeot 5008 also underwent a mightily heavy mid-cycle refresh which has catapulted it to a whole new level of desirability for our Philippine market. Getting a Peugeot today is no longer a novel exercise of acquired tastes. The stylish new models are considerably much more than being categorized and simplified as the most affordable European offerings in the country.

The new Peugeot 5008 builds on the 3008 using an extended EMP2 chassis, adding more features and kit along with the increased passenger and load capacity, weighing approximately 55 kilos more using the same drivetrain. Our test unit came in the very tasteful Emerald Crystal exterior color (also available in Pearl White, Amazonite Grey, and Nera Black) with flexible contrasting stitched black leather interior that extends to a third row with two trick additional seats which can be folded or removed individually. The second-row bench can be adjusted to optimize the occupancy balance.

Once again, like the 3008, our market sources the Peugeot units from the Stellantis plant in Gurun, Kedah, Malaysia. The new 5008 has a 2840 mm (110 mm more than the 3008) wheelbase, a length of 4670 mm (160 mm longer body compared to the 3008), width of 1855 mm (5 mm wider than 3008), and stands at the height of 1655 mm (27 mm taller ceiling than the 3008) with a 7.5-inch ground clearance (.3-inches lower than 3008). The 5008 is substantially more spacious and packaged with much more standard equipment than the 3008 for PhP170,000.00 more money. If you really don’t need the extra space and extra creature comforts however, then the more affordable 3008 will certainly be rewarding and dutiful enough for the less money. However, I think the extra cost is worth it especially when you itemize the differences.

Most of the equipment are carried over from the earlier released 3008; like the awesome frameless front radiator grille, Grip Control that regulates power in four settings (Normal, Snow, Mud, and Sand) depending on the surface, the brilliant new signature DRL “fangs” lighting on the metallized fairing bumper and glossy black side scoops combined with the full-LED headlights, rear lights with three dimensional claws with a transparent smoke window and sequential indicators, the cool digital iCockpit 12.3-inch customizable TFT instrument panel (the graphic interface designs are unique to each model), wireless phone charger, the central 10-inch control touchscreen infotainment system with 6-speakers and Apple CarPlay® & Android Auto™, hands-free powered tailgate, the sensational steering wheel, the brake system is carried over too, the thoughtful shortcut toggle switches, rear 180° reverse camera with front and rear parking sonar, and the overall design treatment.

Now, the updates. We begin with the larger panoramic roof with interior ambient lighting that extends to and outlines the glass. The canvass door trim that I liked in the 3008 now extends to the rear panels which now completes and unifies the look. The trunk capacity is 952 liters with the third-row seats fixed, 1,670 liters with the third-row seating stowed, and 2,042 liters with both the second and third rows folded. The rear seats are still best for children under 12-years old however. There are additional LED mirror puddle lights that project to the ground and highlight the Lion brand logo. There is a different set of two-tone 18-inch alloys wrapped with excellent 225/55R18 98V Continental ContiCrossContact LX2 tires. The 5008 has a slightly larger fuel tank by 3-liters.

The suspension is carried over (MacPherson struts up front and rear torsion beam with dampers) which manages our often-harsh road surfaces expertly. Peugeot calibrated the suspension very well for our Philippine driving surface and traffic conditions. We always felt very planted and nimble with strong compliance and without sloppiness. In fact, the longer wheelbase distributes the weight more optimally, contributing to the crossover’s refined ride stability. It has additional standard driver aids as well; the Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) suite has Active Blind Spot Detection, Active Lane Keep Assistance, Advanced Driver Attention Warning, the Advanced Grip Control, Hill Start Assist, and Hill Assist Descent Control (HADC).

The Peugeot 5008 could very well be the best European automobile of any segment in our market. It is a practical, elegant, and versatile seven-seater with remarkable build quality and fit/finish that so happens to also be enjoyable when driven and as a passenger.
