2022 Toyota Innova V

Forged Resilience

We took another turn around with the iconic and much celebrated Toyota Innova in its refreshed form sporting its new alloys, slightly updated standard equipment and new exterior (Blackish Red Mica, 7 colors available in total for the Innova range) and interior trim (two-tone Noble Brown and black). We still have all our C! Fast Fleet Toyota Innova’s on the road, from the 1st generation to the pre-facelifted 2nd generation. They are truly outstanding workhorses.

The updates were applied last year and carries on for 2022. With a frenzy of so many new entries that have entered and continue to enter the Multi-purpose Vehicle segment, Toyota Motor Philippines gave its best-selling Innova a mild update with new exterior tweaks and added value-for-money features beginning with a bolder front end with a new grille, flanked by LED headlamps and foglamps. The rear lamps also get blacked out frames for a more aggressive appearance and finally the 17” x 6.5J alloys that I initially wanted on our C! Fastfleet V-model wrapped with appropriate 215/55R17 94V Bridgestone Turanza ER33 tires. The new wheels not just improve the aesthetics but more importantly they allow the Innova to generally handle and perform better. Steering feel and overall handling are more composed without being harsh. It still drives and rides like a purposeful truck expertly matched to our Philippine road conditions.

Mechanically, everything was carried over from the 11.1” (282 mm) front vented disc brakes and matching leading-trailing rear drums (with ABS, VSC-Vehicle Stability Control, and HAC-Hill Start Assist Control), suspension (independent double wishbone front and rear coil sprung 4-link rear-wheel driven live-axle) to the engines (172 bhp @ 3400 rpm / 265 lb-ft @1200-3400 for the automatics and 168 bhp @ 3600 rpm / 253 lb-ft @ 1200-3400 rpm for the manuals) and transmissions 6-speed automatic and available 5-speed manual.

I like the new darker “Ube” interior two-tone color scheme and in does blend well with the new exterior color. The 7-inch infotainment head unit now has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity as well as a rear parking camera to support the front and rear sonar sensors though the output on the screen is quite dark and low resolution. We had to pay extra at the Toyota dealership in Alabang to activate the function though it functioned way better than the new camera which is ironically mounted optimally. Other V-spec carried over equipment include Smart Keyless Entry, ambient lighting, cooled upper glovebox, foldable seatback tray tables, 7 SRS bags, and two-zone automatic climate control.

We continue to recognize why the Toyota Innova is so popular in our market but it does need a major evolution soon along with the Fortuner. The competition in the segment is very fierce and only getter more formidable even from Toyota’s own new offerings. The all-new front-wheel driven Toyota Avanza for example has the exact wheelbase length of 2750 mm and already feels as spacious and more modern without having the center tunnel of the Innova’s rear-wheel-drive driveshaft to contend with either.

The Toyota Innova is assembled at TMP’s Santa Rosa, Laguna plant. The updated 2022 Toyota Innova is now available at all Toyota dealers with the following prices:
