Review: 2021 Chery Tiggo 7 Pro

Aesthetics and Refinement

Another day, another crossover. The 2021 Chery Tiggo 7 Pro came in with significant hype. It is the newest addition to Chery Auto Philippines’ lineup and is one of the freshest crossovers in the market today. Consider the technology and conveniences it comes with, the Tiggo 7 Pro looks to be in the top-tier list of bang-for-the-buck brand-new vehicles at a price of P1,198,000.

After its global launch early in 2020, the arrival of the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro is a sign that the brand, under the leadership of United Asia Auto Group, looks to take advantage of the success it reached in its first year in back in the Philippine market. It joins the Tiggo 5X as a middle sibling, slotting in between the slightly more expensive Tiggo 8 and the entry-level model in the Tiggo 2. The Tiggo 7 Pro, however, feels like a tier above its stablemates. On one hand, most of the convenience features and technologies one would get on the Tiggo 8 are present in the new crossover. On the other hand, there’s no doubt that the Tiggo 7 Pro is a wild update when compared to the Tiggo 5X.

The Chery Tiggo 7 Pro takes on a new aesthetic approach and it starts with a new front grille to elevated the fascia. It intercedes the new matrix all-LED headlights that provide three times as much illumination than halogen lights. Due to the new design, the LED daytime running lights have been moved to the lower bumper. The Tiggo 7 Pro gets a floating roof look thanks to the blacked-out D-pillars covered in glass. On top, an integrated luggage rack can carry up to 50 kg has been installed. Wheels on the new crossover are 18-inch alloy wheels. The fluid lines continue to the rear, which now featuring a lightbar that connects the taillights.

Similar to our observations with the Tiggo 8, the interior of the Tiggo 7 Pro is very plush and welcoming throughout. The dashboard and door sidings are illuminated by ambient lights that can be color-adjusted. The ambient lights can also be set to ‘move to the beat’ of the song being played inside the car. It may be a cool feature to have but I found it a quite distracting while driving at night. Good thing it can easily be turned off with a few touches on the screen. At the center is a 10.25-inch infotainment display equipped with Apply CarPlay. Android use will have to settle with QDLink connectivity. Those with capable a smartphone can charge their device using a wireless charging pad. More interestingly, the climate control system is again very similar to those of some Land Rover models – something we previously noticed on the Tiggo 8. This makes sense since the Tiggo 7 Pro sits on the T1X platform, a chassis that shares Jaguar Land Rover technology. The driver is treated with a 4-way adjustable multi-function steering wheel that’s wrapped in leather and stitching. Upfront is a 7-inch digital instrument cluster that shows multimedia, communication, driving information, and other details. For instance, the key fob has a number of tricks as well. Press the lock button for three seconds then the engine and a/c will be turned on remotely.

The Tiggo 7 Pro is also equipped with a 360-degree camera with sensors, which have been a popular feature in the Tiggo 8 and Geely crossovers. Second-row passengers are treated with a/c vents and one USB port. The moonroof also makes the Tiggo 7 Pro more competitive in the market considering its price. In terms of safety, the crossover comes with a total of 6 airbags. Safety technology includes ABS with EBD, electronic stability, emergency brake assist, brake override system, brake assist system, hill descent control, hill hold control, traction control system, and emergency signaling system.

Under the hood of the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro is a new 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 gasoline engine with figures of 145 bhp and 162 lb-ft of torque. This is mated to a 9-speed CVT, replacing the dual-clutch transmission of the previous model. There are other crossovers with more athletic responses to the throttle and with firmer steering, but as a city vehicle, the Tiggo 7 Pro is a comfortable and very capable drive. As a lone passenger most of the time driving around the city, I was able to achieve an average of 8.4 km/L.

Chery Auto Philippines has sure come a long way since its first arrival in the country more than a decade ago. Now armed with better technology and worthwhile developments, the company has been able to enter a competitive Philippine market with well-priced and well-equipped vehicles such as the Chery Tiggo 7 Pro. And at a price of P1,198,000, it deserves to be on the list of people looking to buy a compact crossover.
