For 50 years, Honda has delivered a car that’s captured the attention of millions. The Civic, introduced in 1972, arrived at a time when people yearned for affordable and efficient automobiles. From those humble beginnings, the model evolved with time – cementing its place as one of the most recognizable nameplates not only within the brand but throughout the automotive industry.
To say that the Civic has come a long way would be an understatement. As a globally important car, it has a lot to prove with each generation. So, it’s exciting to see the drastic makeover on the 11th generation Honda Civic. For 2022, the Civic has been completely redesigned with a new look and a collection of new technology. With this latest iteration, a certain harmony is struck between it being premium, fun, and practical.
At first glance, the 2022 Civic flaunts a more mature and elegant look than its predecessor. Honda opted for more conservative lines while upgrading the overall styling. The 2022 Civic is also looking bigger with the eye test when compared side-by-side to the previous generation. There are 45 mm and 35 mm differences in length and wheelbase, respectively.
Both the RS and V grades come standard with automatic Full LED headlights, while the S gets manually-adjusted halogens. Exclusive to the RS are Black Ring headlight extensions, LED High Mount Stop Lamp, Body Color with RS Badge Grille, black door handles, and high gloss black door sash garnishes. Standard for both the RS and V are LED fog lights. Other standard exterior features across all variants are Auto On/Off Headlights, Auto-Off Timer, LED Daytime Running Lights, Side Mirror Integrated Turn Signals, and Shark Fin Antennas.
The front-end maintains a sharp and bold look. But we think that this will appeal to a wider range of people compared to the previous-gen due to the more subtle styling. While the 10th generation design was ‘revolutionary’ when contrasted with the 9th generation’s, some claimed that they wished it used a bit of a more conservative styling – especially with the RS variant. The combination of the slim, pointy headlights uses thin, narrow LED running lights and turn signals adds to the high-class look of the 2022 Civic.
The rear of the 2022 Civic has also been redesigned with a new pair of LED taillights that do away with the C-shaped rear lights found on its predecessor. Exclusive to the RS is a trunk spoiler and chrome-finished exhaust pipes.
Wheel options include a set of 16-inch alloys for the S, 17-inch rims for the V, and 18-inch matte black wheels for the RS.
Similar to the outside, the interior of the 2022 Civic also takes quite a departure from its predecessor. All variants receive new infotainment systems – 7-inches for the lower trims and 9-inches for the RS. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard for all variants, but the RS comes with Wireless Apple CarPlay. The audio system is connected to four speakers for the S, eight for the V, and to a Bose 12-speaker sound system for the RS.
One of the highlights of the new interior is the black honeycomb pattern on the dashboard for all variants. Behind this mesh-like material are the air vents. Despite the new interior technology and features, Honda was able to integrate bits and pieces seamlessly. It helps give the interior a more upscale and organized feel.
Automatic climate control is standard on all variants, but only the RS gets is with dual-zone. Rear air vents are available for both the V and RS. For the instrument cluster, the S and V come with a 7-inch digital display with an analog speedometer. Only the RS is equipped with a 10.2-inch fully digital display. All variants get steering wheel-mounted controls.
For seats, the RS receives a combination of suede and leather upholstery, while the S and V get fabric. The slightly bigger dimensions of the car allowed for generous cabin and cargo space, particularly for the rear passengers.
Engine and Transmission
The local-spec Honda Civic comes with a sole powertrain. Under the hood of all trims is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder DOHC VTEC Turbo engine that’s paired with a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). It makes 176 bhp at 6,000 rpm and 177 lb-ft of torque at 1,700-4,500 rpm. If numbers look familiar, that’s because this is a retuned version of the engine found on the outgoing Civic RS. This reworked power plant makes an additional 5 bhp and 15 lb-ft of torque versus the predecessor. Driving modes include Econ, Normal, and exclusive to the RS, Sport.
With safety technologies becoming more integral in the industry, Honda has chosen to equip all variants of the 2022 Civic with Honda SENSING. Features include Collision Mitigation Braking System, Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow, Lane Keep Assist System, Road Departure Mitigation System with Lane Departure Warning, Auto High-Beam, and Lead Car Departure Notification System.
The Honda SENSING uses a single monocular camera with a wider field of view combined with software that offers vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian, and road marking recognition.
Other safety and convenience features include Speed Sensing Door Locks, Multi-View Reverse Camera, and Keyless Entry System that are standard for all grades, while the Side Curtain Airbags, Honda LaneWatch Camera, and the Walk Away Auto Door Lock function are exclusive on the RS variant.
Standard for all variants are Driver and Front Passenger Airbags, Side Airbags, Anti-Lock Braking System, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Vehicle Stability Assist, Hill Start Assist, Emergency Stop Signal, Child Lock, ISOFIX Child Seat Anchor, Security Alarm, and immobilizer.
