Bill Gates is known the world over as the founder of Microsoft. He is likewise a noted philanthropist and advocate for health and the environment. Yet many folks aren’t aware that he has a soft spot for Porsche.
Yes, the German luxury sports car brand has been a favorite of his and he has some cool examples like the 911 Turbo and the coveted 959. Being an environmentalist, however, it comes as no surprise that he is the proud owner of the new Taycan.
The software founder revealed this in an interview with YouTube tech, video, and podcast creator Marques Brownee wherein he expressed how much he enjoyed the all-electric Porsche. It’s his first electric car, he says, and he truly enjoys it.
For Gates, the Porsche Taycan, along with cars like Tesla, are one way to help reduce our carbon footprint and greenhouse gases. The only issues hindering this, he notes, are the high acquisition cost and peoples’ range anxiety.
While the Taycan may charge (no pun intended) a premium, it’s easy to see why Gates loves it. It may have four doors yet it is more akin to the iconic 911 than to the four-door sports car, the Panamera. It’s a Porsche in every sense of the word. Sure, it’s electric but it still drives with the responsiveness and fun of every car with the Porsche Crest.
Porsche offers the Taycan in three flavors. There’s the “base” Taycan 4S with 530 bhp and a driving range of an estimated 407 kms. Those that want a bit more punch can go for the Taycan Turbo, with its 680 bhp electric motor that allows it to go from 0-100 km/h in 3.2 seconds yet still reach 450 kms between charges. The top-spec Taycan Turbo S wo want the ultimate in electric car performance. It has 761 bhp on tap, a Launch Control-assisted 0-100 km/h time of 2.8 seconds, and an estimated driving range of 412 kms.
Porsche Philippines has said that it will be bringing in the Taycan within the year. So if you want to be counted among those who have gone electric just like Bill Gates, you might want to ask you Porsche dealer about it.
