Geely Coolray: Looking to bring a bit of coolness to the segment

There’s no denying the widening appeal of crossovers, specifically the subcompact crossover, to the Filipino motorists.  Small families and young individuals go for such types of vehicles over sedans due to their versatility, high ground clearance, and SUV like character.

So it’s no surprise that Chinese brand Geely’s first entry into the local market is a subcompact crossover, the Colray. For around P1,198M, you do get a lot of car (or crossover) for the money.

For starters, the Coolray boasts of a Star Wars or futuristic exterior. This is complemented by headlights that come in either halogen or the now en vogue LED lighting. Same goes for the taillights, ideal for better visibility to those behind. The higher-end variants even get two-tone paintwork.

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by a cabin that can take in up to five occupants and their gear. A cool thing about the Coolray is that it gets some neat toys such as a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, a panoramic sunroof, leather seats, metal accents on the dash and various parts of the interior, and an automated parking assist feature.

Yes, all this for just P1,198M!

While the 1.5-liter three-cylinder turbocharged motor may look smallish, look a bit closer at the specs and you will realize this lump produces 174bhp and 188lb-ft of torque—figures akin to a 2.0-liter turbo milll. Mated to  a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox, it can do the 0-100km/h sprint in a claimed 7.9 ticks.

Sure, customers in this segment couldn’t exactly care less about performance and look more at versatility. But the Geely Coolray ups the “cool” factor as it packs both in its stylish subcompact crossover body.

So does it have the cool factor? Let us know what you think.
