True to its mission of bringing communities together on and off the road, Waze teams up with the Department of Transportation, CNN Philippines, and DZMM 630 Radyo Patrol for Crisis Response to the Taal Volcano eruption.
January 12, 2020 was the day that Taal Volcano had a phreatic erruption which generated a 15km ash column. This has not only affected the Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon) region but Metro Manila and parts of Southern Luzon as well.
The effects include road closures due to poor visibility and slippery conditions, along with the evacuation of numerous citizens who live within the 16km danger zone. To this end, Waze’s Crisis Response Team has put in place warnings on road closures, along with prompting Wazers on evacuation and donation zones.
The road closures prompt will help Wazers avoid being inconvenienced and stay out of harm’s way. The same goes for the evacuation zones, which are prompted once they type a destination within the danger or volcanic zone.
As for the donation zone, the nearest donation center will be shown on their screen each time they type donate. It’s Waze’s way of making it easier for them to lend a helping hand.
