Some of you may remember Chery Auto’s presence in the Philippines, together with what was arguably their most popular product, the Chery QQ hatchback. The brand didn’t quite enjoy the reception they hoped back then, but FOTON Philippines distributor and manufacturer United Asia Auto Group, Inc. (UAAGI) believe that it’s the right time to reintroduce the Chinese brand to the market, with affordably-priced quality crossover SUVs backed by a solid after sales program.
“The time is ripe for us to bring in a second automotive brand, and we are convinced that Chery Auto now has the right mix of design, features, technology, and pricing in its product line to make a strong impact on the Philippine market,” said UAAGI president Rommel Sytin during the official media launch held at The Tent at Solaire in Pasay City.
“History and experience are the best teachers, and we have learned a lot from FOTON’s success in the Philippine market as well as where previous efforts to market Chery have failed — and we have taken all that to heart,” shared Sytin.
The lineup of Chery models that will mark the initial reentry to the Philippine market will be composed of an all-crossover range. These are the Tiggo 2, Tiggo 5X, Tiggo 7, and the 7-seater Tiggo 8. All models are powered by modern 1.5-liter inline 4 fuel-injected DOHC 16-valve Euro 5-compliant petrol engines (turbocharged for the Tiggo 7 and Tiggo 8) and mated to either 5-speed manual transmissions, CVT, or 6-speed dual-clutch automatics.
The Tiggo 2 is the smallest of the lineup, slated to go against the likes of the Nissan Juke or Ford EcoSport. A quick look at the specs reveal a decent amount of equipment for its price. The subcompact crossover’s 1.5 liter engine produces 106 hp and 135 lb-ft of torque, mated to either a 5-speed manual or CVT transmission, and comes with ABS, Stability Control, Hill Assist, Traction Control, Dual Front Airbags, and disc brakes for all four corners.
The Tiggo 5x is a subcompact crossover meant to go up against the Honda HR-V or Mazda CX3. It uses the same 1.5 liter engine tuned for a bit more output at 114hp and 104 lb-ft of torque, again with the choice of a 5-speed manual or CVT. The Tiggo 5x comes with even more equipment, with the top-of-the-line Tiggo 5x Luxury trim adding cruise control, 6-way power adjustments for the driver, auto climate control, push button start, leather seats, sunroof, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Next on the list is the Tiggo 7, a compact crossover competing against the likes of the Honda CR-V or Toyota RAV4. There’s only one variant for this model, and it uses the same 1.5 liter engine, now turbocharged to produce 145 hp and 155 Nm of torque with the engine mated to a dual-clutch transmission. The Tiggo 7 gets all the goodies mentioned previously, with the addition of side airbags, rain sensing wipers, a 9-inch touchscreen powering 6 speakers, front and reverse radar, and a panoramic sunroof.
Lastly, the flagship of the brand, the Tiggo 8, is a 7-seater mid-sized crossover SUV powered by the same turbocharged 1.5 liter engine producing 145 hp and 155 Nm of torque mated to a 6-speed dual clutch transmission. It’s fully equipped with the best Chery Auto has to offer, with the inclusion of curtain airbags, LED daytime running lights, and a 360-degree panoramic view camera.
To emphasize their confidence in the vehicles, Chery Auto Philippines is offering an industry-leading 10-Year/1 Million-km Powertrain Warranty on top of a 5-Year General Vehicle Warranty. And to sweeten the purchase, Chery Auto Philippines is offering a 3-year FREE Preventive Maintenance Service (PMS) to all buyers of any Tiggo model.
