Geely continues to be the best-selling Chinese automaker globally

Despite experiencing setbacks in its home market, Geely Automobile Holdings Limited (Geely Auto) continues to be the best selling Chinese automaker in the global market. Total sales were pegged at 1,361,560 units in 2019.

The said figure represents a significant increase in total vehicle sales, helping the Chinese brand retain its Sales Champion title. The sales rise was due in no small part to its new energy vehicles, which sold a total of 113,067 units—equating to a year-on-year increase of 68.6 percent.

What really helped Geely Auto in 2019 was the SUV segment, which accounted for 709,841 vehicles or 52.1 percent of total sales volume. Yet even its premium brand, Lynk & Co., did pretty well with 128,606 units leaving showroom floors—a 6.4 percent rise in total sales.

Apart from its “regular” lineup, the introduction of the Geometry high end pure energy nameplate was a boost to the brand’s total output. Vehicles like the Geometry A, Jaji MPV, Xingyue Coupe SUV, Lynk & Co 03+, and Boyue PRO were also helpful in boosting sales.

Geely Auto, however, is not about to rest on its laurels. On the contrary, 2020 looks to be a big year for the Chinese marque.

It intends to surpass its previous showing by targeting around 1.41 million units this year. It plans to launch 6 new vehicles, made up of the first midsize SUV code named VX11, the second BMA architecture-based SUV, a coupe SUV using the CMA architecture, the Lynk & Co 05, and the GE13, which is the internal code for the second pure electric model from Geometry.

Besides this, Lynk & Co is set to begin selling in Europe and compete with top European brands. This should be a significant step in Geely Auto’s bid towards staying on top of the auto landscape.

A bit further down the road, Geely Auto has entered into an agreement to be a partner in the 2022 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. Here, it is set to showcase “forward-looking mobility lifestyle” technologies.

And with Geely making its presence felt in our local market, it looks like the Chinese automotive marque may just be on its way to reaching its targets for the year 2020.
