SMC starts dredging a larger portion of Tullahan River

San Miguel Corporation continues its efforts to dredge the Tullahan-Tinajeros River in Bulacan by expanding the scope of the project to include the portion from the Tinjajeros Bridege all the way to Potrero in Navotas and Valenzuela.

This is in line with the ongoing flood mitigation projects that hope to reduce the flooding in the cities of Malabon, Navotas, and Valenzuela. Since it began dredging the river system, SMC had been concentrating on the portion from Manila Bay to the Tinajeros Bridge.

Before the dredging project began, the river depth was down to just 2 meters due to the silt and solid waste that accumulated over the years. SMC’s efforts, however, were able to increase this to close to 5 meters. Yet the task is far from over as it had obly clean ed up 112,000 meters of waste—a small portion of the 1.5 million metric tons it aims to clear by the end of the project.

By increasing the scope of the cleanup to 11.5kms from the previous 5.25kms, SMC is about halfway of the 27km stretch of river. With this, it hopes to reduce or even totally eliminate flooding in the Northern portion of Metro Manila and its surrounding environs in the years to come.
