Ever since the latest-generation Isuzu D-Max made its official debut in Thailand, Filipinos have been eagerly awaiting its local arrival. Well, the wait is over as Isuzu Philippines Corporation finally unveils the 2021 D-Max via digital reveal.
Taking its cue from a lineage of tough and reliable workhorses, the new D-Max sports a bold and emotional design that brings it well into the modern era. It’s a look that would be at home both in the wilderness as well as the country club.
Step inside and you are greeted by an equally bold yet functional cabin with touches like an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Bluetooth connectivity. The tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel is likewise modern and won’t look out of place in a passenger car.
But the real reason for being of this erstwhile truck is its go-anywhere capability. This time, it combines this with modern touches that cater not only to hardcore off-roaders but to lifestyle-oriented buyers and businesspeople as well.
For instance, it offers two engine choices: a 3.0-liter 4JJ3-TCX common rail direct injection diesel mill with 190bhp and 331lb-ft of torque, or the improved RZ4E-TC engine with 150bhp and 258lb-ft of torque. These engines are paired with either an MT or AT and two- or four-wheel drive.
Apart from this, the new D-Max is engineered and built to be tougher with a semi-midship engine for better weight distribution, high strength steel with a rigid structure, along with larger side rails and 8 cross members, and new front suspension geometry and rear leaf spring design for improved ride comfort while still being able to take on rugged terrain.
Moreover, the new D-Max has 800mm water wading capability, a one-piece aluminum tail shaft, a new Terrain Control system with a dial selector for easier operation, and an electronic locking differential that allow it to tackle the toughest conditions and terrain with confidence.
Speaking of confidence, Isuzu throws in a plethora of safety gear such as 7 SRS airbags, ABS with EBD, Electronic Stability Control with traction control, hill start assist and hill descent control, brake override function, and welcome and follow me home lighting.
As if these aren’t enough, the top-spec 3.0 LS-E variant gets a host of technologies with its Advanced Driver Assist System. Utilizing a Duo Cam or two stereo cameras, it gives the truck advanced systems such as Forward Collision Warning, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Pedal Mis-application Mitigation, Turn Assist, manual speed limiter, Adaptive Cruise Control, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, parking aid, and multi collision brake. All this has garnered a 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating.
All told, the new Isuzu D-Max mixes the age-old traits of reliability and durability with cutting-edge technology to serve up a stylish and capable pick-up catering to a wide range of buyers.
