The 3rd-generation Peugeot 308 ushers in a new era for the marque

Earlier this year, French carmaker Peugeot announced a brand refresh with a new logo and identity. The first fruit of that revamp is here, the 3rd-generation Peugeot 308.

Just like its other stablemates, the new 308 gets the new grille, as well as the cascading lights on the bumper. This one, though, receives the new logo, signaling the beginning of a new era.

This can be seen in touches like the concept-car like interior with its 10-inch displays for both the instrument cluster and infotainment systems. There are also modern conveniences like wireless charging pad, electrically-adjustable seats, 8-color ambient lighting, 10-speaker Focal sound system, and touch key for HVAC and other controls.

Riding on an updated EMP2 platform, the new Peugeot 308 is powered by either a 110bhp or 130bhp 1.2-liter 3-cylinder turbo engine. It is paired to either a 6-speed manual or 8-speed AT. There is also a 1.5-liter four-cylinder diesel version producing 130bhp and can be mated to either a manual or auto gearbox.

This being a new generation Peugeot, hybrid power is now part of the mix. Buyers have a choice between a 180bhp or 225bhp total system output, both with an 81bhp electric motor and a 12.4kWh battery. Peugeot says one can travel in pure EV mode for up to 60kms.

Now bigger in every dimension and offering more passenger and cargo room, the new Peugeot 308 is poised to do battle with the likes of the erstwhile VW Golf. It promises to be a practical yet fun-to-drive choice.

Expect to see the new Peugeot 308 hit European showrooms by the second half of 2021.
