The all-new Honda Civic Type R is finally here

While the Civic nameplate is an important nameplate for Honda, it is the Type R moniker that’s considered as its halo model. Yes, everyone waits for the newest Civic model. But only true enthusiasts await what the TYpe R will be for a particular generation. Well, the wait for the 11th-generation’s halo car is over as Honda has just unveiled the latest-generation Honda Civic Type R.

As the Type R celebrates its 30th birthday, the newest iteration arrives on the scene looking a lot more subdued than its predecessor. While the last model had a whole lot of intakes, vortex generators, and huge wings, this one tones things down a bit.

Sure, there is still a subtle hood intake. And the side vents are still there, albeit more subdued yet still very functional in directing airflow. Then there is the new mesh grille with the trademark red H logo and Type R badging. Over  at the rear, the wing is still very much present, this time made of aluminum to help save weight and improve downforce. Everything is finished off by the trademark centrally-mounted triple exhaust tips, with the center one being the largest.

Sitting lower and wider, the new Type R’s aggressive stance is complemented by wider Michelin Pilot Sport 4S ribber. This, Honda  claims, helps provide better grip and handling through the corners.

Step inside and you’ll be greeted by a sea of red on the seats, carpets, and seatbelts. The signature dash from the 11th-gen Civic is present. This time, however, it gets a +R mode that allows drivers to bring out the car’s full potential.

Speaking of, the new Civic Type R will be powered by what Honda claims is a more potent version of the familiar 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The Japanese company did not give any power or performance figures, though. It did say these will be provided later this year closer to the market launch. And it claims that this is the most powerful Type R ever built.

So, what are the Civic Type R’s power and performance figures? This is just one unanswered question that we all have. But let’s just wait for Honda to give us the full details later this year. In the meantime, what do you think of the new Honda Civic Type R?
