The Hummer returns as a fully electric vehicle

Rumors of an all-electric Hummer have been floating around for quite some time now. This was further fueled by General Motors itself releasing teaser images of the said rig earlier this year. Well, all these have come to pass as GM has just unveiled the 2022 GMC Hummer EV.

Taking its cue from the AM General HMMMV military vehicle that later spawned the Hummer, the GMC Hummer EV is a futuristic take that blends the tough styling of the original with earth-friendly propulsion.

The new Hummer EV, as the name suggests, will be powered by three electric motors that are said to produce 1,000bhp and a claimed 11,500lb-ft of torque. Powering all four wheels, the setup can propel the truck from 0-100km/h in a quick 3 seconds when the drive mode selector is set to the optional Watts to Freedom mode.

As for range, GM says you can drive up to 563kms on a single charge. Topping up can be done with a DC fast charger option, which can take around 10 minutes that’s good for a 160km range.

Besides going fast, however, this truck is also about going off the beaten path. GM packs it with all-wheel steering that will help it in rock-crawling situations with a feature called CrabWalk. This angles the rear wheels to follow those in front, allowing for almost sideways movement.

Off-roading is made easier with UltraVision underbody cameras that help drivers see where their wheels are pointing, as well as what’s underneath. This feature, GM says, is also useful n tight parking spaces. All told, you can have as many as 18 camera views.

All this tech is wrapped in a body that pays homage to the original Humvee. The squared-off flanks are enhanced by H-shaped headlights flanking a LED light bar with a seven-slat “grille” that is reminiscent of Hummers past. Wide fender flares house the 35-inch Goodyear tires that are ready to hit the slopes while an enclosed pick-up bed with power tonneau cover and GM’s Multi-Pro tailgate complete the package

With its Ultium battery pack underneath serving to make the truck more rigid, GM was able to utilize removable roof panels that can be stowed in the front trunk (frunk) and a power rear window to give passengers open air motoring. Inside, the Hummer EV has a large 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen complemented by a 12.3-inch instrument cluster. It’s all in keeping with GM’s bid to put this truck in sync with the times. Needless to say, all the connectivity options expected of a modern vehicle are part of the mix.

The GMC Hummer EV will be available beginning in the third quarter of 2021.
