With the launch of the new AMG GLA35 4Matic, we thought that this was the subcompact crossover’s performance version. Apparently, it was only a warm up to an even more potent performer. This is the new Mercedes-AMG GLA 4Matic+ and GLA45 S 4Matic+
The new monikers aren’t just for show as this pair boasts a more powerful version of the hand-built 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder mill that produces either 387bhp or 421bhp. Torque is rated at up to 369lb-ft.
All this potent force is channeled to all four wheels via 8-speed DCT and a more advanced 4Matic all-wheel drive system. This allows the GLA45 4Matic+ to do the 0-100km/h run in 4.4 seconds while the S 4Matic+ can do the same in 4.3 ticks. Top speed is at 250km/h for the former while the latter goes all the way to 270km/h.
Apart from the more powerful motor, the engine itself is tuned with intelligent technologies to produce better results in terms of performance and efficiency. It has, for instance, been pivoted an entire 180 degrees, making the exhaust and turbocharger face the firewall while the intake manifold is now at the front of the vehicle. This makes for better breathing and aerodynamic efficiency for both intake and exhaust ports.
The transmissions has likewise been tuned to produce faster shifts and thus, better response times. There is even a standard Race-Start setting for quicker times off the line. This is complemented by the AMG-tuned 4Matic+ all-wheel drive system that helps provide more agile handling in any driving situation and on any road surface.
The driver can even choose between several driving modes that include Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Slippery, Individual, and Race. The last one makes the AMG GLAa45 S 4Matic+ a true track machine despite it being a practical crossover.
And this is what this model is all about. It gives buyers the chance to enjoy the drive while still having the space for passengers and cargo at their disposal.
