Mercedes-AMG GLA35 4Matic looks like one fun yet practical performer

For most folks, the Mercedes-Benz GLA is a subcompact crossover that’s tuned more for the urban jungle. A city slicker, if you will. Well, it looks like this little runabout is now the newest member of the AMG family as it gets the AMG GLA35 4Matic badge, with a host of upgrades to boot.

Visually, the new Mercedes-AMG GLA35 4Matic gets cues like the trademark AMG grille from Affalterbach, a new front splitter, diffuser at the rear, and upgraded alloy rims. Inside, the same story holds true with ARTICO man-made leather and DINAMICA microfiber, the new MBUX infotainment system, and an optional AMG steering wheel.

The last bit is most interesting as it not only makes driving more inviting. It likewise adds more buttons to access certain driving functions. It can likewise make access to the new AMG display modes much easier. Drivers can choose between Classic, Sport, and Supersport that puts the rev counter in the center, flanked by gauges shown as bars for a more racy touch.

All this, of course, is not just for show as the AMG 35 line’s 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder finds its way under the hood of the AMG GLA35 4Matic. Here, it produces 306bhp and 295lb-ft of torque. Coursed through an 8-speed DCT to all four wheels via 4Matic all-wheel drive, the little Merc crossover does the 0-100km/h sprint in just 5.2 seconds.

Drivers can also choose between several driving modes to suit their style and the road ahead. Using the Dynamic Select function, drivers can choose between Comfort, Sport, Sport Plus, Individual, and a new Slippery setting that allows one to have a bit of surefooted fun even on low grip surfaces such as snow and ice.

Putting all this in check are the front 4-piston monoblock fixed calipers with 350mm discs and rear 1-piston sliding calipers on 330mm discs. It’s all designed to provide fade free stops each time.

All these are rounded out by goodies like variable ratio steering and exhaust system with exhaust gas flap for added sound modulation. Again, each system is designed to make driving a lot more fun.

With this, the GLA in AMG GLA35 4Matic guise looks to be one potent yet practical performer on road and on track.
