Toyota expands MPV lineup with all-new Calya

The long-running Avanza is now joined by an even smaller after Toyota Indonesia recently revealed the 2016 Calya ahead of this year’s Gaikindo International Auto Show (GIIAS). The new MPV is the company’s latest Low Cost Green Car (LCGC) for Indonesia and gets styling cues from the Wigo and new-generation Innova, along with a seven-seat layout.

Beginning with the exterior, the Calya’s front fascia has a large upper chrome grill and fender-wrapped headlights. It also has an Innova-inspired lower black grill and circular foglights with silver accents. Towards the side, all variants of the 2016 Calya roll on two-tone 14-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 175/65 Bridgestone Ecopia tires. Like the Innova, it also features a kink on the third-row window.

At the rear, more styling cues from the Innova are seen on the 2016 Calya. These include the L-shaped taillights, wide rear glass and thick chrome garnish on the tailgate. Rounding it all off is a tailgate-mounted wing, rear lip spoiler and bee-sting antenna.

Size-wise, the Calya measures 4,070mm long (-120mm), 1,655mm wide (+5mm), 1,600mm tall (-95mm) and has a 2,525mm wheelbase. Compared to the body-on-frame Avanza, the unibody Calya is 120mm shorter in length, 5mm wider and 95mm shorter in height. The wheelbase is also shorter by 130mm.

In terms of equipment, both E and G variants of the Calya get fabric seats, manual air-conditioning, power windows, multi-information display, one touch tumble down 60:40 split-folding second-row seats and a bench-type third row. Both variants also get a 2-DIN multimedia system that feature AM/FM radio, CD, USB and Aux. Bluetooth connectivity, along with 4 speakers are only standard on G variants however.

Other extra features available in G variants are the: front foglights, electronic folding side mirrors, silver accents on the door and dashboard and chrome accents on the aircon vents and gear knob.

Powering the Calya is a 3NR 1.2-liter DOHC inline-four with Dual VVT-i. Peak power of 87 BHP is achieved at 6000 rpm along with 80 lb. ft. of torque at 4200 rpm. Transmission options for the 2016 Calya include a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual that drives the front wheels.

Safety features available in both G and E variants include: dual front SRS airbags and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Anti-lock brakes also come as standard on G variants as well as the E automatic. The E manual does not have it however.
